    The University of Deusto in the ERC Advanced Grant CoDeFeL project framework invites applications for one (01) open doctoral research position at the ERC CoDeFeL, Control for Deep and Federated Learning project.

     

    Purpose of the position:

    The Chair of Computational Mathematics at University of Deusto (Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain), is dedicated to advancing research, training, and outreach in various aspects of Applied Mathematics. Our team works actively in the broad area of Applied Mathematics and Machine Learning, developing and applying methods of Mathematical and Computational Mathematics to model, understand, design and control the dynamics of various phenomena arising in the interface of Mathematics with Engineering, Physics, Environment and Climate Sciences and Social Sciences.

     

    In particular, CoDeFeL seeks to make a breakthrough that takes the mathematical foundations of Machine Learning beyond their present frontiers, through the systematic development of new ideas and methods inspired by control theory. The project is developed by the “Chair for Dynamics, Control, Machine Learning, and Numerics" – Alexander von Humboldt Professorship in cooperation with the Chair of Computational Mathematics of the University of Deusto in Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain led by Enrique Zuazua.

    We are looking for a doctoral researcher specialized in Control and/or mathematics and /or Machine Learning and knowledge in Partial Differential Equations and Numerical Analysis as well as computational skills to develop computational coding.

     

    The candidate is expected to be able to structure and address the research challenges of the ERC CoDeFeL project and collaborate and work effectively with internal and external teams within the project framework. Depending on experience, the candidate should be able to work both independently and collaboratively in an international and interdisciplinary environment.

In all cases, the certificate or other supporting document must state the maximum and minimum grades within the corresponding assessment system and the minimum grade required to pass. With a multidisciplinary team, connected to the main scientific institutions, networks and socio-economic agents, for a decade, our contribution to research of climate change and to the science-policy interface puts us in a unique position to offer knowledge, tools, new methodologies and cross-cutting proposals, that we lead towards action in a collaborative framework with stakeholders, to design and help implement policies aimed at sustainable development.



    Main functions

    The Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) is offering a full-time Scientific Project Manager position based on-site at BC3 to provide cross-cutting management and coordination support across several climate action initiatives led by Dr. Estibaliz Sanz. The selected candidate will contribute to JUST4CARE (HORIZON-MISS-2024-CLIMA-01) – A Horizon Europe project that will be coordinated by BC3, which seeks to transform climate adaptation by embedding principles of justice, equity, and resilience into urban and regional planning. The project places special emphasis on addressing the needs of vulnerable and marginalized populations most affected by climate change across European cities and regions.

    The selected candidate will be responsible for the overall coordination and day-to-day operational management of the JUST4CARE project, under the direct supervision of the Scientific Coordinator. The selected candidate will play a pivotal role in ensuring the effective and timely implementation of the project, with a strong emphasis on financial oversight, administrative coordination, and compliance with reporting obligations. They will be responsible for monitoring the delivery of project outputs and milestones, and for ensuring the efficient and coherent execution of activities across all consortium partners.

    Key responsibilities include:

    • Supporting the Scientific Coordinator in the strategic management of the project and technical discussions.
    • Leading the financial and administrative management of the project at the consortium level, including budget monitoring, expenditure tracking, and coordination with BC3’s financial department.
    • Acting as the main contact point between the Scientific Coordinator, project partners, and the European Commission, facilitating clear and effective communication.
    • Monitoring the implementation of Work Packages (WPs), ensuring timely delivery of project deliverables and milestones, and maintaining up-to-date documentation and progress indicators.
    • Coordinating and supervising the implementation of tasks by partners, ensuring alignment with the work plan and contractual obligations.
    • Preparing and submitting technical and financial reports to the European Commission, and ensuring compliance with Horizon Europe guidelines.
    • Managing interactions with internal and external experts on ethical, legal, and technical matters, as well as with the external advisory board.
    • Organizing project meetings and events, including their financial, logistical, and reporting aspects.


    Requisites

    Supporting communication and dissemination activities, in collaboration with relevant WPs

    Main requirements/skills: 

    • Master or PhD degree.
    • At least 3 years of proven experience in managing projects involving international consortiums.
    • Excellent project management skills related to finance, administration and communication.
    • Ability to coordinate teamwork and interact with a broad range of scientific and policy stakeholders at European level.
    • Experience in R&D EU projects, knowledge of H2020 and Horizon Europe Programme.
    • Proven experience in organizing meeting and events.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in attending high-level meetings in a global context.
    • Experience in constructing indicators to measure progress and performance accurately.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Excellent written and oral command of English and Spanish.

    Requisites

    • Conocimientos de herramientas de control de costes y presupuestos.
    • Experiencia en control de planificación.

    Main functions

    The research topic encompasses a new direction in the field of spintronics: the generation and detection of orbital angular momentum currents, in analogy to spin transport. Phenomena that allows us to generate and detect orbital currents will be studied, such as the orbital Hall effect in light metals and the orbital Rashba-Edelstein effect at interfaces, as well as the interconversion between orbital and spin currents in materials with spin-orbit coupling. The project foresees the integration of working systems into functional nanodevices.  

    The research to be performed will require the the nanofabrication of devices (thin film deposition, electron-beam lithography, etching) in cleanroom, materials characterization, and magnetotransport measurements (high magnetic fields and low temperatures).

Besides Ecosystem Services and Biodiversity, the RL also tackles Natural Capital Accounting, Conservation Finance, Food Security, Marine Spatial Planning, and Renewable Energy. All these products are used to inform sustainability decisions, e.g. SDGs.

    About the project:

    JUST4CARE (HORIZON-MISS-2024-CLIMA-01) – A Horizon Europe Mission project coordinated by BC3 that aims to transform climate adaptation by embedding justice, equity and resilience into urban and regional planning. The project places special emphasis on the needs of vulnerable and marginalised populations that are disproportionately affected by climate change across European cities and regions.

    We are looking for a geospatial data scientist who can conduct advanced modelling and spatial-equity analyses (e.g. urban heat-risk, flood exposure, socio-economic vulnerability), co-develop just adaptation indicators, and translate findings into actionable guidance for partner cities and regions.

    Key responsibilities:

    • Specializing in urban risk and geoinformatics, the role involves developing and managing large, global datasets to support geospatial analysis. This involves designing and implementing data models capable of handling diverse and massive datasets, ensuring data accuracy, and developing efficient workflows for analysis. Rev. Mater. 10, 285 (2025)]. These advanced techniques enable imaging and spectroscopy at visible, infrared, and terahertz frequencies with spatial resolution improved by a factor of 100 to 1000 compared to conventional optical methods. Our research has not only laid the foundation for s-SNOM and nano-FTIR technologies but also demonstrated their immense potential across a wide range of applications, including nanoscale conductivity mapping, chemical identification of materials, and the exploration of exotic optical phenomena in 2D and quantum materials.
