Predoctoral Researcher for PARTY project: Participatory evaluation of climate change adaptation in urban areas
BC3 Basque Centre for Climate Change
Deadline: 2025/10/19
Province: Bizkaia
City: Leioa
Category: Academia-PhD
Sectors:
Professional, scientific and technical activitiesBC3 is a Research Centre on the causes and consequences of climate change. Led by one of the most recognized scientists in the Climate Change field -Prof. Maria José Sanz, we produce multidisciplinary knowledge to support decision making towards sustainable development at the international level. With a multidisciplinary team, connected to the main scientific institutions, networks and socio-economic agents, for a decade, our contribution to research of climate change and to the science-policy interface puts us in a unique position to offer knowledge, tools, new methodologies and cross-cutting proposals, that we lead towards action in a collaborative framework with stakeholders, to design and help implement policies aimed at sustainable development.
Main functionsThe Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) offers a full-time PhD position to support the development of the project “PARTY – Participatory evaluation of climate change adaptation in urban areas” funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MICIU), the State Research Agency (AEI) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), under the “Proyectos de Generación de Conocimiento y Actuaciones para la formación de personal investigador predoctoral 2024” Call (ref. PID2024-161042OA-I00), led by Dr Marta Olazabal.
This is a 3-year research project that will be developed in the framework of the Adaptation Lab (Research Line 4) and the cross-cutting Urban Theme at BC3. PARTY will be carried out within the framework and in collaboration with the team of the ERC-funded project IMAGINE Adaptation.
About the project:
IMAGINE Adaptation addresses the imperative of how to evaluate adaptation in urban areas as a contemporary complex phenomenon with implications across governance scales. The project argues that the current focus on policy progress can be useful as a first step, but it is not indicative of effective adaptation. A broader understanding of success in adaptation is required: one that transcends technocratic approaches and considers equity, justice and maladaptive issues. PARTY develops a new research line within IMAGINE Adaptation by focusing on evaluation processes led and participated in by affected communities and alternative stakeholders, different from those making decisions in public administrations. PARTY aims to investigate how participatory evaluation processes can enable more just and transformative climate change adaptation in urban areas. So far, there is little understanding of how communities and other local adaptation actors can be involved, and what the benefits of this critical effort are, regardless of the importance of integrating their knowledge into adaptation decision-making to deliver more effective climate risk and vulnerability reduction in cities. PARTY has three objectives: The first objective involves the development of a critical understanding of the different ways in which communities can participate and how these modes may shape different outcomes for evaluation processes, community empowerment, and the effectiveness of urban adaptation efforts. Second, PARTY will investigate the benefits that participatory evaluation processes can offer for communities and identify how these values and benefits can be ensured and made sustainable. Finally, PARTY aims to identify opportunities for integrating participatory evaluation within formal adaptation practices and institutional frameworks for more just and transformative practice. The project will involve participatory work with four communities and connected urban adaptation interventions in Spain (Seville, Madrid and Cordoba) and overseas (Bogota).
Job description:
We are looking for an individual who can develop a PhD research project in alignment with the overarching objective of PARTY (investigating how (participatory) evaluation and learning processes can promote more just and transformative climate change adaptation in urban areas) while supporting key project activities.
Key responsibilities:
- Develop a research proposal that aligns with the overarching objectives of the PARTY and IMAGINE Adaptation projects.
- Conduct original research and produce three peer-reviewed scientific articles over the course of the PhD project, forming the basis of the PhD dissertation.
